History of my car.
This mustang was originally ordered from Ellard Motors, Leduc, Alberta, Canada in 1966 and was delivered in early 67. I have the original owners manual and also a Marti report stating it's an original 390, GTA ,well optioned vehicle. Ellard Motors was a popular Ford Dealership here in the 60's in the Edmonton, Alberta area.
I was at a carshow a few years back and ran into an older gentleman that noticed my GTA hat I was wearing. He points to the hat and says GTA Mustang? Yes I said and he goes I have one too. We talk a bit and he asks about mine where it came from etc. I mention Ellard Motors and he says I was the lot boy there from 66 to 69...I drove your car. I asked him if he had any ellard motors emblems for the trunk. He said they didn't have emblems but used a green metalflake type sticker. Wasn't sure if he had any left or not. I just thought it would be fun to have one.
The car was originally ordered in springtime yellow with black GT stripes and black vinyl roof. Cost of the car with all the options was basically more than a Shelby at the time. Very unusual to order a coupe with all the options and large motor as most people went for a fastback or if they were spending that type of money a Shelby.
I bought the car off of Francis (frenchie) in 1982. He worked at a local mustang supply house here in the 80's and I was picking up parts for my other GTA 390 car I was working on. I would see this car there all the time and each time I looked at it I noticed more and more things about it, like factory air, tilt-away,etc.etc. One day I finally seen Frenchie driving it and flagged him down and asked him about it. He told me the shop was closing next week and the car was for sale as he was moving back east. I asked him how much? and before he answered he said come in for a minute. He then pulled out a stack of reciepts, bills, etc. for over $10,000 into the car. Also told me about picking up some rare items for it from California such as the remote trunk release. I ended up making a deal with him that night and traded my 68 cougar and some $ for this car.
He came back to Alberta a few years later and offered to buy the car back for a very generous sum, told him no. Few years later offered a new mustang straight across as a trade, told him no. Later on he bought a 68 california special that he fixed up and did numerous work too. He would keep racing me with his 289 GT/CS and finally did enough work to the engine that he could pass me in my bare bones stock 390 GTA. He then asked if I wanted to trade for his GT/CS.....try to guess what my reply was.
I also had a chance to buy a 69 Mach 1 before I got this car. I seen it on the street one day and talked to the owner who had just moved here from B.C. It was a 69 Mach 428 4 Speed. I always wanted a 69 mach 1 but at the time figured it was too expensive. $5500. so I passed. What's funny is my high school buddy Claude (a.k.a. Mr. Mustang) calls me one day and says you better come over I have something to show you. I tell him yeah I have something to show you too and I pull up in the GTA. He says oh you bought Frenchie's car, 390,GTA, etc. knew all about it. Then he says check this out as he throws open the garage door and there's the Mach 1. I laughed and said you got the B.C. car and you paid too much. Fantastic Mach 1 and I had lots of good rides in it with Mr. Mustang rowing through the gears and was always an adventure getting it stopped as it was special ordered with drum brakes up front instead of the factory mach discs. Also no power brakes.
I have added a few non stock items to the car such as BF Goodrich radial TA's. (always hoped they would make a radial GTA) 60 series on the back, 70's up front, chromed headlight rings, chrome shock towers, chrome hood hinges,am/fm stereo with rear speakers, power antenna,etc.etc. | | | Mr. Mustang and the 69 Mach 1 428 4 speed and magnum 500 wheels with spinners. | | | | | |
